How to Replace Window Screens

 
When window and door screens are torn, they allow bugs into your home. When they’re sagging or rusty, they look terrible and darken rooms. Fortunately, most screens are easy to remove and replace. The frames will be either wood or metal, and the screens will be either metal (typically aluminum) or fiberglass. Chances are the frames themselves will not need attention nearly as often as the screens.When cutting new metal screen fabric, be sure to wear gloves to protect your hands from sharp edges. Roll the screening out with the curved side down and mark your cutting line with a pencil along a straightedge. Cut metal screening with tin snips; for vinyl screening you can cut with a utility knife or scissors.

1. Use a screwdriver to pry up the spline that runs around the perimeter of the frame. Pull out the spline and remove the old or damaged screen fabric

2. Lay the new screen fabric over the frame, and, using sharp utility scissors, trim it so that it is just slightly larger than the frame. Then snip off the corners.

3. Using the convex wheel of a screen-spline roller, force the screen into the spline channel. Then push the spline back in, and, using the roller’s concave wheel, force the spline into place, stretching the screen fabric taut. Cut off the excess screen fabric with a utility knife.

Do you have a window out to your patio that you would like to pass food through?  We can install a retractable pass-through window screen.  Retractable screens are made out of heavy duty extruded aluminum and are powder coated which will give them a better appearance while providing a long-lasting easy to clean surface. Only Silicone lubrication required as screen simply glides within a small out of the way track.  No wheels or rollers to replace or fix.

Phifer glass is woven from permanent glass yarn, then coated with a protective vinyl to ensure lasting beauty, color and flexibility. It is produced under the most exacting
conditions to meet extremely rigid specifications Phifer glass is noncombustible and will not rust, corrode or stain.

Standard Window Screen and Door Screen (18×16 Mesh Insect Screen) – This standard fiberglass screen is the mesh applied in most windows and doors. Easily fabricated, this high-quality standard mesh is the preferred insect screening in the fenestration industry.

Pool and Patio Screen (18×14 Mesh Insect Screen) – Pool, Patio and Porch Screen is stronger than Standard Window and Door Screen, making it the ideal screen for large openings such as screen porches, and patio and pool enclosures. Designed for applications where extra strength is desirable.

How do Window Screen Wickets work?

A small metal or plastic door mounted in the window screen. Wickets may be hinged or sliding. They all allow access to window operators or some other object on the other side of a screen. Normally used on exterior opening casements or awning windows

Plastic wicket is 10 1/8″ wide and 6 1/8″ tall and allow easy access to casement or awning window operators. You install your own wire into the wicket to match the rest of the screen. The wicket has a snap-type latch for secure closure, and can be installed along any 10″ minimum wide section of the screen frame.

Our vent screens are crafted to compliment the finest project-out windows. The smooth sliding wicket door allows easy access to window operators. Rugged aluminum screen wire resists rust and corrosion while providing excellent insect protection.

Looking to Reduce the Electric Bill

 

My electric bill is one that I really struggle with. Reviewing our bills over the past year, even in the cooler months when we use gas heat, our electric bill runs about $95. Our home is 1800 sq. ft. I’ve recently had my drier fixed, so hopefully we’ll see some relief from that, but it vents out through the roof so it still runs longer than it would if it had a shorter venting. Besides caulking around our windows, do you have any suggestions on cost savings?

 Here are a list of things that we have found use up a lot of electricity if they are not operating efficiently:

Refrigerator/Freezers – If they are old, they may be inefficient and run constantly.

Electric range (if applicable) – Again if it’s old, it may not be as efficient as it could be. Also if you bake/cook a lot, it may raise your bill. Gas is more efficient for cooking that electric (IMHO). I think electric ranges/ovens waste a lot of energy in pre-heating.

Window/Door Screens – Install screens that are missing on your windows and doors on glass sliding doors, entry doors and windows to allow for increased ventilation, temperature control and insect protection.  

Lights – Consider replacing non-essential lighting with fluorescent units. We have yard light that gives us as much light as two 60 watt bulbs and uses only about 35 watts.

Dryer – Make sure it is clean and free of lint. Consider the use of an off-peak meter. The power is cheaper, but you have to use during times when overall electrical demand is lower (late evening etc.). Check with your local power company for more information.

Hot water (if applicable) – If you have electric hot water, that could account for a large part of your bill. If possible, switch to gas. If that is not feasible, reduce the temperature of the tank to 130-140 and insulate it with a jacket. The best value for hot water is what is called ‘on demand hot water’. It is also known as tankless hot water. It heats the water as you use it. You have a continuous stream of hot water and don’t have to heat it while you store it. The initial cost can be prohibitive, but if you have a lot of family members or use large amounts of hot water, you realize savings pretty quickly.

Air Conditioning – If it is an older model, it may not be as efficient as it could be. Also, ACs that operate on 220 volts versus 120 volts generally use less power.

Overall, check with your local power company. Some offer programs where they will help you find areas in your house that are using excess power. Some will even help you make changes to become more efficient.
