Roll Form vs. Extruded Aluminum Screen Doors

 I installed 2 screen doors in pacific palisades for a customer that was looking to upgrade her existing roll form door to extruded aluminum screen doors. What to look for in a sliding patio screen door:

Roll-formed sliding patio screen door frame is the less costly form of screen door frame that many builders use on new homes. Try to avoid roll-formed screen door frames if you are buying a sliding patio screen door replacement. Roll-formed screen doors are inexpensive but they are also flimsy. They won’t stand up to someone walking into the screen, they will usually bend. It’s next to impossible to fix a badly bent roll-formed screen door.

Roll-formed screen doors are most often made of aluminum. The aluminum used in roll-forming is usually quite thin and bends easily. By forming the aluminum into the shape shown it makes it stronger but the aluminum is still so thin it doesn’t hold screws very well, and doesn’t hold its grip when the corners are installed which hold the door together.

There are some roll-formed screen doors that are made from steel. This gives a great improvement in strength but it does make the door heavier. A steel roll-formed door needs ball bearing rollers to support its weight. Usually steel roll-formed doors just come with plastic rollers which won’t last long.

In order to get around the problem of having to custom fit each screen door to the patio door height, some roll-formed door companies are using an adjustable plastic “shoe” at the bottom of the screen door. There are long slots in the shoe with screws which you tighten after you have adjusted the shoe to the correct height.

The problem with this system is the “shoe” often catches on part of your patio door when you try to open the screen door. The shoe also has only room for the cheapest of plastic rollers which don’t have springs to keep them on the track as the door opens.

Extruded patio screen door frame is the style of frame you do want to buy. These use more aluminum and are more costly but they are much stronger than roll-formed screen door frames. The strength comes from the thicker aluminum and the design of the screen frame itself.

Extruded patio screen door frames also stand up to someone walking through the screen door a lot better. Usually the worst that happens is the whole door just pops out and you have to put it back on again.

Extruded screen doors are usually supplied with much better rollers which have springs to keep the rollers on the track as the door opens. The extra strength and stiffness of the door holds brackets and corners much better. The thicker aluminum profile allows room for locks to be installed.

How to Replace Window Screens

 
When window and door screens are torn, they allow bugs into your home. When they’re sagging or rusty, they look terrible and darken rooms. Fortunately, most screens are easy to remove and replace. The frames will be either wood or metal, and the screens will be either metal (typically aluminum) or fiberglass. Chances are the frames themselves will not need attention nearly as often as the screens.When cutting new metal screen fabric, be sure to wear gloves to protect your hands from sharp edges. Roll the screening out with the curved side down and mark your cutting line with a pencil along a straightedge. Cut metal screening with tin snips; for vinyl screening you can cut with a utility knife or scissors.

1. Use a screwdriver to pry up the spline that runs around the perimeter of the frame. Pull out the spline and remove the old or damaged screen fabric

2. Lay the new screen fabric over the frame, and, using sharp utility scissors, trim it so that it is just slightly larger than the frame. Then snip off the corners.

3. Using the convex wheel of a screen-spline roller, force the screen into the spline channel. Then push the spline back in, and, using the roller’s concave wheel, force the spline into place, stretching the screen fabric taut. Cut off the excess screen fabric with a utility knife.

How to fix your screen doors. Some tips for you Handy Men and Women.

These are the simplest types of screen door installation and removal. Here the screen door is on the outside and is easy to get at. More than likely, the screen door will have two rollers or plastic glides at the bottom and two at the top which will have to be loosened so that they dont break when the door is removed.

Usually there is some kind of adjustment screw at the edges of the door or sticking up above the roller as in the pictures on the left hand side. Loosen the adjustment screw until the roller moves in and the door becomes easier to move up and down. If the screws are rusty, spraying them with WD40 or penetrating oil may help loosen them.

Lift the screen door up slightly, you should see the bottom rollers or wheels just poking out the bottom of the screen door. Just like they are in the pictures.

Take a flat blade screwdriver and slide it under the spring loaded rollers and gently lift them up. Carefully pry the bottom edge of the door and the roller out over top of the screen door track where the rollers glide. Lift the entire screen door frame up and out of the bottom screen door track.

Once you have the screen door out, check the rollers to make sure all of them roll easily and adjust properly. Some screen door rollers require that the frame taken apart before they can be removed. Better to know that now than after you have completed your sliding screen door installation job.

To reinstall the screen door do all of the above steps in reverse order. Start by installing the door in the center of the patio door. Get the rollers on top of the screen door onto their track. Then push the door back to the vertical position. Dont force the bottom rollers on to the bottom track. Use a flat screwdriver to gently pry them over and onto their track. Then adjust the rollers to raise the door. Adjust the rollers until the vertical bar with the screen door handle is perfectly parallel to the vertical patio door frame on the lock side.

With the door reinstalled, screw in the adjustment screws until each roller lifts the screen door up off the track. Usually 1/8” is all that’s needed. Adjust both bottom rollers so that the door closes squarely in the frame. Adjust the lock if there is one. You may need to adjust the position of the lock hasp to get the screen door lock to function again.
